Your immune system plays a vital role in your health as it protects your body from harmful infections and viruses. It creates, stores, and distributes your body’s white blood cells, which fight bacteria and viruses that attack it. CBG promotes immunity, stamina, proper functioning of the heart and nervous system.
CBG and the endocannabinoid system
As we already know, cannabinoids interact with the endocannabinoid system. The built-in endocannabinoid system (eCS) of the human body helps maintain balance in a state of homeostasis. In turn, the endocannabinoid system (ECS) is integral to how our immune system self-regulates and maintains a healthy balance of self-protection without harming itself. However, sometimes the immune response is disproportionate to the degree of damage. This leads to an immune attack on healthy tissue, a condition known as autoimmunity. Autoimmunity is a damaging component of many common diseases, from arthritis to Crohn’s disease to Alzheimer’s disease and MS.
CBG effects
CBG is not a psychoactive substance. In addition, CBG is a CB1 receptor antagonist, which means that it acts directly on the human nervous system. CBG is believed to inhibit the uptake of GABA in the brain, which in turn reduces general anxiety and muscle tension. As a CB1 antagonist, cannabigerol may reduce some of the effects of THC. Some recreational users don’t like it because it can reduce the “intoxicating” effect. Others, on the contrary, prefer to use it because it can remove some of the fear and paranoia associated with high THC species. However, the exact way THC and CBG interact is not fully understood.
Cannabigerol may also interact with the properties of CBD as CBG has been shown to reverse some of the anti-nausea effects of CBD due to its reciprocal effect on the 5HT(1A) receptor.
CBG benefits and uses
The medical benefits of CBG are still under investigation, but the list is impressive and growing.
It is important to note that most of the evidence comes from preclinical studies, meaning that the safety and efficacy of CBG in humans still needs to be proven. However, research on CBG has revealed many potential benefits.
-
Stimulation of bone formation and healing
A 2007 study examined the effects of CBG and other cannabinoids on bone marrow cultures. The results showed that they can stimulate bone marrow stem cells indirectly through the CB2 receptor. This suggests that CBG and other cannabinoids can help heal broken bones by promoting new growth and bone formation.
-
Slowing tumor growth
A 2009 review article reported that CBD, CBG, and CBC, along with other cannabinoids, slow the progression and growth of various tumors and cancer cells. By slowing tumor growth, these cannabinoids can extend the lives of people battling cancer.
One study showed that cannabigerol inhibits the growth of colon cancer cells. This study also confirms that cannabigerol has many modes of interaction that also bind to many previously discussed receptors. Cannabigerol’s ability to block TRPM8 gives it anti-cancer properties, and the same mechanism also showed that it helps with prostate cancer.
Other points to antitumor CBG activity on skin cancer cells. It seems clear that cannabigerol can help with many different cancers.
One study compared many different treatment options for their ability to kill a particular type of cancer cell. Of all those tested, CBG was the most successful in reducing the growth of cancer cells.
While we have already shown that research currently suggests using THC and CBD in tandem for cancer treatment, cannabigerol can also be used in combination.
-
Antifungal and antibacterial treatment
The antifungal and antimicrobial properties of various cannabinoids, including CBG, are currently being studied. CBG has proven its effectiveness against MRSA in a 2008 study. MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) is a widely used antibiotic-resistant bacterial strain.
-
Pain relief
CBG and other cannabinoids are known to have analgesic effects for a variety of reasons, including pain caused by multiple sclerosis and cancer. Due to its analgesic effect CBG is considered a great pain reliever for conditions such as multiple sclerosis (MS) and pain caused by certain cancers, as well as many soft tissue diseases.

Reducing inflammation
According to the study, CBG has the ability to reduce inflammationtargeting specific molecules responsible for inflammation in various disease states, including pain syndromes, cancer, and even inflammatory bowel disease. For example, research shows that CBG can act as a COX-2 inhibitor, similar to commonly used drugs called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
-
Bladder treatment
Cannabis and cannabinoid drugs have been used to treat various bladder dysfunctions. In a 2015 study, researchers tested the effects of CBG and other cannabinoids on experimentally induced bladder contractions. CBG and CBV showed the strongest ability to reduce bladder contractions.
-
Psoriasis and skin treatment
CBG and other cannabinoids may be useful in the treatment of various skin conditions due to the presence of cannabinoid receptors in the skin. In a 2007 study, it was shown that CBG inhibits keratinocyte proliferation, indicating its role in the treatment of psoriasis. Notably, all of the cannabinoids tested had this effect even when they blocked CB1 and CB2 receptors, indicating that another unknown mechanism is responsible for these properties.
-
Glaucoma treatment
It has long been suggested that cannabis helps relieve severe eye pain associated with glaucoma. A 1990 study by the Department of Ophthalmology at the West Virginia University Health Sciences Center found that CBG among other compounds increases the aqueous humor of the eye chambers to reduce intraocular pressure and provides other relief.
-
Treatment for depression and anxiety
Recent studies also show that CBG has analgesic and antidepressant properties, which have potentially pain-relieving and mood-relieving effects. It is well known that it can help THC patients suffering from depression and anxiety. CBG has been found to have similar effects, but does not produce the intoxicating effect known to THC. A 2016 report states that non-psychotic cannabinoids such as CBG may be a potential alternative treatment for anxiety and depression.
-
Neuroprotective Effects
In 2015, a study of animal models of Huntington's disease, CBG found to be 'extremely active as a neuroprotector'. CBG treatment improved movement and recovery in mice with Huntington's disease and protected neurons from degeneration. CBG has also shown potential anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. The researchers concluded that CBG should be further explored as a treatment for neurodegenerative diseases.
