Arthritis in Dogs – Can CBD Improve Symptoms?

Arthritis is a disease for which there is no effective treatment yet. It is also a common disease in dogs. According to the American Kennel Club, it affects one in five dogs in the United States. Since canine arthritis symptoms are particularly similar to those of humans, they have been the subject of research.

“We studied dogs because experimental data show that spontaneous arthritis models, especially in domesticated dog species, are more suitable for evaluating the treatment of arthritis pain in humans than other animal models. The biological characteristics of arthritis in dogs are very similar to those in humans.” Galpert said.

CBD derived from the hemp plant can significantly reduce production of inflammatory molecules and immune cells, associated with arthritis. These studies were first conducted in a mouse model and also showed that CBD significantly improved quality of life in dogs with arthritis.

“The popularity of CBD is rapidly growing due to its health benefits for a variety of conditions, from reducing anxiety to helping with movement disorders,” said author Dr. Matthew Halpert, Research Department, Department of Pathology and Immunology, Baylor. “In 2019, Medterra CBD asked Baylor to conduct independent scientific research to determine the biological capabilities of several of its products.”

The study measured the effects of CBD on arthritis-related immune responses in both human and mouse cells grown in laboratory and mouse models. CBD treatment has been found to lead to decrease the production of both inflammatory molecules and immune cells associated with arthritis.

The 20 dogs that participated in the study were examined at Sunset Hospital in Houston. Dog owners were randomly given identical, unidentified drug vials that contained CBD, liposomal CBD, or a placebo. Neither the owners nor the veterinarian knew what treatment each dog was receiving.

After four weeks of daily treatment, owners and veterinarians reported on the condition of the dogs, whether they observed changes in the animals’ pain levels, such as changes associated with movement. Dog blood cell counts and liver and kidney function tests were also assessed before and after four weeks of treatment.

“We found encouraging results” Halpert said. “Nine out of 10 dogs with CBD showed improvementsthat persisted for two weeks after stopping treatment. We found no change in the blood markers we measured, suggesting that, in the setting of our study, treatment seems to safe”. “
