Arthritis – what is it?

There are over 100 different types of arthritis and related conditions. People of all ages can have arthritis.

CBD and its action

Cannabinoids, such as CBD, bind to special receptors in the human brain and immune system. CBD oil affects brain activity. It interacts with two receptors, CB1 and CB2, to reduce pain and inflammatory effects.

CB2 also plays a role in your immune system. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) refers to the immune system that attacks the tissues of the joints. So this relation to the immune system may explain why CBD oil seems to work well for RA symptoms.

Moreover, anti-inflammatory effects of CBD may also help slow or stop the progression of RAresulting in permanent damage to the joints over time. These effects may also reduce some of the other inflammatory symptoms of RA, such as fatigue and fever.

Research on CBD and Arthritis

The first controlled trial evaluating the use of cannabis-based drugs for the treatment of RA was conducted in 2006. The researchers concluded that a cannabis-based drug called Sativex reduced inflammation after five weeks of use and significantly reduced pain. Participants also reported improved sleep and most of the side effects were mild.

A 2008 review of the use of CBD for chronic pain also found that CBD reduces pain and improves sleep without negative side effects.

In 2016, another study was conducted with CBD gel on rats. The researchers reiterated that the CBD gel reduced joint pain and inflammation without side effects.

CBD and arthritis in animals
