What is CBD and how does it work in the body?
Much has been written about CBD. Most importantly, however, it is non-psychoactive a compound in the hemp plant that is credited with many therapeutic properties.
CBD interacts with the body through the endocannabinoid system, or ECS. The ECS is a biological system found in all mammals that is involved in controlling various biological processes, including memory, sleep, immune response, and more. It consists mainly of two types of cannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2). These receptors are designed to interact with endocannabinoids (cannabinoids naturally produced by the body). However, they can also interact with plant-derived cannabinoids such as CBD, which in turn cause various reactions throughout the body. Read more about EX here.

The most common CBD benefits for dogs that I have noticed are:
1. Works great for pain
2. Anticonvulsant
3. Has an anti-inflammatory effect
4. Relieves stress
5. Has an anti-cancer effect
6. Supports Homeostasis
Let's take a closer look at the list of CBD benefits for dogs:
1. CBD is effective in fighting pain
In 1997, a study published in the European Journal of Pharmacology showed that the endocannabinoid system is deeply involved in pain management. Today, CBD is famous for its pain-relieving properties. So CBD can help deal with pain different ways.
Research has also shown that CBD can temporarily increase the absorption of anandamide (a chemical that helps reduce pain signals in the brain).
2. CBD is a well-known anticonvulsant
Perhaps one of the most well-known benefits of CBD is its ability to to help control convulsions, tremors, tics and spasms. This is because CBD is a natural anticonvulsant.
News about the natural anti-seizure properties of CBD first broke in 2013, when the story of Charlotte Figi, a young girl with epilepsy, caught on around the world.
Charlotte's only hope for dealing with her 300-weekly seizures was the tincture now known as Charlotte's Web, made from CBD-rich hemp. Since then, numerous studies have shown that CBD can help manage a variety of tremors, convulsions, and tics. For example, several studies have shown that CBD can help manage seizures caused by epilepsy.

3. CBD is anti-inflammatory
As I mentioned, CBD is known for its anti-inflammatory effects. In fact, the anti-inflammatory effects of CBD are considered one of the main reasons why the compound is so useful as a dietary supplement in the treatment of a wide range of conditions. It is believed that the anti-inflammatory effect of CBD is due to its ability to interact with receptors on immune cells. It interacts with CB2 receptors, which are normally found inside immune cells. By activating these receptors, CBD is able to induce various immune responses - one of these responses is to fight inflammation.
Conditions such as arthritis, multiple sclerosis, irritable bowel disease, and many others are characterized by chronic inflammation. In some cases, this inflammation can be caused by a malfunction of the immune system that attacks healthy cells. Helping decrease inflammation, CBD can help relieve pain and other symptoms of conditions such as arthritis and others.
4. CBD reduces anxiety and stress
It is important to understand that CBD does more than just eliminate physical symptoms.
In fact, many studies have shown that CBD can help manage the symptoms of various mental conditions, including anxiety. Just like humans, pets can suffer from anxiety, stress, or even certain phobias. And while the exact source of anxiety can vary among pets, it can cause stress and specific physical responses, just as it does in humans.
Some common forms of anxiety affecting dogs include separation anxiety, noise, travel anxiety, and even certain phobias.
Some common symptoms of anxiety in dogs include:
- constant barking
- Chewing (furniture, shoes, trash, etc.)
- Urination and bowel movements (usually inside the house)
- Aggression
- Shiver
CBD has been shown to help reduce feelings of anxiety, thereby reducing these symptoms. However, how exactly he does this is not entirely clear.
5. CBD May Slow Tumor Growth
Cancer and harmful tumors are common in pets and in many cases are fatal.
To date, there is no cure for cancer, and treatment is usually aimed at slowing tumor growth and reducing pain and other symptoms.
The most common treatment for cancer and tumors in pets is chemotherapy.
Unfortunately, just like in humans, chemotherapy can cause a number of side effects, including:
- Fatigue, tiredness and lethargy
- Loss of appetite
- Nausea
- Diarrhea
However, new research suggests that cannabinoids like CBD may also have unique anti-cancer effects.
For example, a 2011 study at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston found that CBD could induce programmed cell death, thereby inhibiting the growth of breast cancer. Another study published by researchers at the University of Naples Federico II in Italy also showed that CBD may help protect against colon cancer in rats by stopping the development, growth, and spread of malignancies. Research by the Complutense University of Madrid has also shown that CBD and other cannabinoids can enhance the effects of traditional chemotherapy.

6. CBD Promotes Homeostasis
Homeostasis can best be described as the proper functioning of the body, or the body in harmonious balance.
It ensures the normal function of the biological system. However, sometimes the body is out of balance and it is at this time that disease strikes.
New research shows that the endocannabinoid system plays a key role in maintaining this balance, mainly because it is involved in a wide range of bodily processes. Thus, the researchers suggest that by stimulating the endocannabinoid system, cannabinoids such as CBD may promote homeostasis in the body.
Therefore, many pet owners choose to use CBD not only as a medicine to treat a specific medical condition, but also as a regular supplement to support the overall health and well-being of their pet.
Try CBD With Your Pets: Things to Keep in Mind
If your pet suffers from chronic pain, anxiety/stress, epilepsy, chronic inflammatory conditions such as arthritis or IBD, or cancer, I highly recommend trying CBD.
I am sharing our family's story about my dog Rosie. She had cancer and hip dysplasia.
I did my research and met with my veterinarian to discuss CBD, after which I decided to try it with Rosie.
And the results were incredible. Just a few days after the treatment, I saw a huge improvement in Rosie's condition, symptom relief and overall quality of life.
