Are you concerned that CBD oil and CBD products can be addictive? Whether CBD is addictive or not is the most common question among users of these products and those who just want to get started.
It is true that addiction to marijuana (THC) exists. But what about CBD oils? It’s also from hemp, but… in short, no. CBD oil is not addictive. Here is the explanation.
What is drug addiction?
Addiction is chronic condition, which causes a person to look for a substance, whether or not it has harmful effects. Whether a substance is addictive depends on whether it affects or disrupts the way nerve cells in the brain send, receive, and process information. Nearly all addictive substances focus on the brain’s dopamine system. Dopamine, also called the “happiness hormone”.
With regular use of this substance, the brain adapts to these dopamine supplies by producing less dopamine. This causes the person to regularly take drugs, sugar, fats, alcohol, cigarettes…replenish dopamine levels again and rest.
CBD is not addictive
To understand why CBD is not addictive, we need to know what CBD oil is made of. From hemp (Cannabis sativa – from EU-certified varieties of industrial hemp) is extracted CBD cannabidiol, a non-psychoactive cannabinoidwhich dissolves in hemp seed oil.
CBD oil also contains other valuable substances such as omega-3 fatty acids, terpenes, vitamins, chlorophyll, amino acids and trace amounts of over 85 other cannabinoids. However, the quality and variety of the composition depends on the method of extraction. For a complete cocktail of functional substances and a synergistic effect, it is advisable to combine alcohol and CO2 extraction.

CBD vs. THC - Their Impact on Addiction
Unlike marijuana, CBD oil contains only traces of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), a psychoactive cannabinoid that can cause addiction and euphoric states.THC binds directly to cannabinoid 1 (CB1) receptors in the brain. "happiness hormone", which explains why THC can be addictive.
CBD oil is not addictive as it simply contains trace amounts of CBD or none at all.
Example. While marijuana typically contains THC levels ranging from 10% to 30%, hemp-derived CBD oil typically has no more than 0.2% THC - 33 times less than the least potent marijuana.
CBD even serves as an "antagonist" of CB1 receptors. This means that it actually blocks THC from binding to cannabinoid receptors, making it difficult for it to work. Thus, CBD protects against the negative effects of THC.
CBD is not addictive, but can an overdose happen?
The use of CBD products is considered safe and non-toxic, even in large quantities. The side effects that can occur with a large dose of CBD are minimal and often disappear immediately. These are, for example, dry mouth, low blood pressure, and drowsiness. There have been no reported cases of CBD overdose, which could lead to serious health effects.
In 2017, the World Health Organization (WHO), United Nations Public Health Agency reported that CBD is not addictive: "In humans, CBD does not have any effects that could lead to addiction. CBD is well tolerated and safe for human consumption."
Even large doses of CBD are safe. In 2011, scientists who studied the maintenance of CBD in humans concluded that regular use at high doses of up to 1500 mg of CBD per day was well tolerated.
Despite the absence of serious side effects when taking large amounts of CBD, recommended to start at a low dose and gradually increase your CBD intake according to your good feelings.
