Rectal administration of cannabis has many benefits
Better suction
The reason that rectal administration is best for hemp oils is because of the rectal mucosa, which provides blood and lymph, which is capable of efficient systemic absorption. The rectum is relatively underutilized in some societies as a route for the safe administration of drugs, perhaps due to the intimacy of the site compared to more socially accepted and visible routes such as oral, topical, or injection.
Better than oral
In addition to being a viable option for patients who cannot swallow cannabis, the benefits of using it rectally rather than orally are:
It starts to work faster, in about 10-15 minutes, compared to oral intervention, where it may not be felt for 30-90 minutes as it has to travel through the intestines and liver. This continues for a long period of time (from 4 to 8:00)
It is 50-70 percent more effective, while oral digestion of hemp oil is only about 20 percent effective, and therefore has “excellent bioavailability.”
Reduces side effects
In addition to a more efficient delivery route, rectal administration also reduces some of the side effects that oral administration can cause, such as gastric irritation, nausea and vomiting (Tortora and Derrickson, 2008).

- People with severe pain or distress: Because cannabis is also an excellent natural pain reliever.
- Hemp oil is ideal for alleviating and treating hemorrhoids.
- Anal itching – hemp oil can soothe the mucous membranes and relieve the symptoms of common anal disorders.
- Beginners: with a low tolerance for cannabis and may be taking it for the first time as high levels are lower.
There are also some people who just have a sensitive stomach that gets irritated when using cannabis, and so rectal administration negates the gastric effect.
