What is CBG?

CBG was first discovered in Israel in 1964. Researchers Yehiel Goni and Rafael Mechulam were able to isolate CBG, THC and CBD from the hemp plant. Maybe they didn’t realize how important it was back then. However, this discovery became the foundation of our understanding of the plant today.

Unlike THC, CBG does not have psychoactive properties. It exists in some types of industrial hemp, as well as in other, stronger strains. However, research on CBG is still in its infancy. There is no doubt that we still have a lot to learn about this substance. However, thanks to scientists like Gaoni and Mechulam, we know much more about them. Studies have shown that CBG and other cannabinoids have a noticeable effect on the human body.

How does CBG work in our body?

Like other cannabinoids, CBG acts on the endocannabinoid system in our body. The endocannabinoid system is a complex set of receptors (CB1 and CB2 receptors), chemicals called endocannabinoids, and enzymes.

Endocannabinoids are compounds that our bodies produce. They bind to CB1 and CB2 receptors. Their role is to help regulate many of our physiological functions and maintain a state of internal balance.

CB1 receptors are found mainly in nervous system and brain. CB2 receptors are located anywhere in the body, especially in the cells of the immune system. Many different endocannabinoids can bind to these receptors, but the best known are anandamide (AEA) and 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG).

AEA binds primarily to CB1 receptors and acts very similarly to a neurotransmitter influencing our cognitive function and mood. On the other hand, 2-AG binds to CB1 and CB2 receptors, which has an anti-inflammatory effect.

The cannabinoids in hemp can also bind to these receptors due to their similar shape.

Research has shown that CBG binds primarily to CB2 receptors.

This complex interplay between various plant cannabinoids and the endocannabinoid system in the body is called the "entourage effect". Scientists are just beginning to understand this. However, some believe that using these cannabinoids in combination is more beneficial than using either alone.

What is CBG used for?

We still don't fully understand the benefits of CBG. However, initial research suggests that it can be a useful tool for a wide range of physical and mental conditions. Let's take a look at the existing research on CBG and how it can affect our health.

• Anti-inflammatory action of CBG

CBG has anti-inflammatory properties. Hence, it could potentially help in the treatment of many different chronic diseases.

One study on CBG for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) produced interesting results. The researchers found that it reduced inflammatory markers in mice with induced CRS and mild colitis. Based on these results, the study authors suggest that CBG should be further tested in humans as a treatment for CRS.

• Neuroprotective effects of CBG

In addition to its anti-inflammatory effects, CBG may also act as an antioxidant and protect the nervous system from damage. This happens in a similar way to the endocannabinoid 2-AG.

Another animal study on the neuroprotective effects of CBG produced some interesting results. It has been found that CBG can help improve motor deficits and preserve neurons in neurodegenerative diseases such as Huntington's disease.

• CBG as an appetite stimulant

CBG also shows great promise as an appetite stimulant, as researchers found in a 2016 Appetite Study. They gave the rats either CBG or a placebo and observed their eating habits. The rats that ate CBG increased the number of meals and doubled their total food intake. However, the amount of food consumed and the length of meals were not affected.

The researchers found no side effects in rats treated with CBG. This could potentially make this cannabinoid a promising therapy for conditions such as anorexia and cachexia.

• CBG for bladder problems

A 2015 study of cannabinoids for bladder dysfunction found they were able to reduce acetylcholine-induced bladder contractions in mice. Among all the cannabinoids tested, CBG was one of the most effective along with 99-tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV). CBG has also shown results to reduce these contractions in humans.
