As we already know, CBD along with THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) are the main cannabinoids in the hemp plant and are only two of the hundreds of possible cannabinoids present in hemp. In fact, over 100 cannabinoids have been identified so far, and each of them, although sometimes found only in extremely low concentrations, has its own therapeutic benefits. One lesser known cannabinoid that is starting to make its way into the mainstream is CBC, or cannabichromene.
What is CBH?
Cannabichromene, also called cannabichromene, pentylcannabichromene, cannabinochromene, and cannanbichromene, is a phytocannabinoid that is structurally similar to other cannabinoids such as THC, CBD, and CBN.
Like other cannabinoids, CBC does not actually originate as CBC but rather as cannabichromenic acid and is produced over time by decarboxylation. CBC is not psychoactive and interacts with the endocannabinoid system it differs from THC and CBD in that it binds poorly to CB1 and CB2 receptors in the brain.

In 2019, a study was conducted that looked at the often misunderstood mechanisms of action of CBC and found that CBC acts as a selective CB2 receptor agonist. It has not yet gone through planning under the Convention on Psychotropic Substances, which means its use is now legal.
What does the study say about CBC?
In fact, research on CBC goes back to a 1981 study that tested the anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antifungal properties of CBC in rats. According to studies, it showed anti-inflammatory effects better than phenylbutazone, an NSAID anti-inflammatory drug. CBC has also been shown to be a strong antibacterial agent and a mild to moderate fungicide.
A study was conducted in 2010 to investigate how CBD and CBC affect downstream antinociceptive activity in anesthetized rats. Both cannabinoids have been found to elicit an antinociceptive response when interacting with different targets involved in pain control. To put it simply, CBD and CBC have been found to help relieve pain caused by nerve damage due to their ability to block sensory neuronal cells from detecting pain.
In 2012, it was again seen as an inhibitor of inflammation-induced hypermobility in rats. The researchers looked at CBC as a way to control or suppress the excessive digestive tract in rats caused by inflammation. The results showed a positive correlation between CBC and normalization of intestinal motility.
The 2013 study "Effects of Cannabichrome on Adult Neural Stem/Progenitor Cells" examined three different phytocannabinoids in relation to adult neural progenitor cells in rats. These cells are similar to stem cells but are more specific and play an important role in brain function and general pathology, making them very important. CBC has been found to have a positive effect in assessing the viability of adult neural stem cell progenitors in vitro, indicating protective properties of nerves.
Effects of CBC
- Antimicrobial - CBC fights bacteria. It has a "strong" antibacterial effect on various gram-positive, gram-negative and acid-fast bacteria.
- Antiviral - May play a role in the antiviral effects of cannabis.
- Anti-inflammatory properties - CBC can reduce swelling and inflammation of the intestinal tract. CBC is reported to fight inflammation without activating cannabinoid receptors and is more effective when combined with other cannabinoids.
- Painkiller - reduces pain, although not as much as THC. CBC contributes to the overall pain-relieving effects of cannabis. It fights pain by "interacting with multiple targets involved in pain management" at the level of the spine. CBC is not psychoactive, and scientists are hopeful that these cannabis compounds can be used to treat pain - without high pain.
- Antidepressant - fights depression.
- Antiproliferative - inhibits the growth of cancerous tumors. This may be due to its interaction with anandamide (an endocannabinoid, which means our body produces it naturally). It affects CB1 receptors and CB2 receptors and has been found to fight breast cancer.
- Migraine - CBX has also been a successful treatment for migraine.
CBC exhibits properties similar to other cannabinoids in terms of its anti-inflammatory properties, pain relief, neuroprotective properties, pathogen control, anticancer properties, and gastric absorption. Like CBD with THC, research on this compound is ongoing and new applications are still coming. Studies have shown that CBB works alone as a single treatment and in combination with other cannabinoids.
Focus on combination
Although CBD and hemp in general have spread to traditional medicine, they differ from standard medicines in that they fall into the category of herbal medicine - the so-called natural path J. When it comes to plant medicine, it is often beneficial to take only one part of the plant - for example, a cannabinoid, such as CBC - for its isolation and increase in accordance with specific medicinal properties.
This can often be useful if we know that a certain property of a plant cures a certain disease. Sometimes this is the best answer. Sometimes it doesn't. When it comes to herbal medicine, the accompaniment effect can be a powerful force.
Plants are complex structures made up of various substances. These substances can be beneficial on their own or combined with other substances within to create an even stronger reaction, we call this a side effect but it is actually a full herbal effect. Instead of focusing on one isolated part of the plant, she focuses on the combination of the parts and the additional benefits those combinations can bring.
When dealing with cannabinoids like CBC, CBD, CBN, THC, etc., the idea of what they can do together is often more compelling than what they can achieve in isolation. In this systematic review, published in 2019, scientists reviewed years of research on cannabinoid release versus the effect of cannabinoid accompaniment and the many different uses of both.
